Hybrid Work Expands Access to Global Career Opportunities Beyond Costa Rica’s Greater Metropolitan Area

<pp:caseid>784767</pp:caseid>

Flexible work models are helping connect skilled professionals in rural communities with specialized roles and international career pathways

Heredia, Costa Rica — For decades, pursuing a professional career in Costa Rica often required relocating to the Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA), where most corporate and specialized employment opportunities were concentrated. Today, the continued evolution of hybrid work models is helping reshape that reality, enabling highly skilled professionals to build global careers while remaining in the communities they call home.

This shift reflects a broader transformation among multinational companies operating in Costa Rica. According to a recent survey by CINDE, more than 80% of multinational organizations in the country currently operate under hybrid work models, driven by the need to access specialized talent, enhance productivity, and strengthen employee retention.

As these models continue to mature, they are creating new pathways for professionals located outside the country’s primary urban centers. At the same time, labor market studies continue to highlight persistent geographic disparities, with flexible work opportunities remaining more concentrated in urban areas while rural communities often face greater challenges related to employment access, transportation and connectivity.

Amid this evolving employment landscape, TransUnion’s Global Capability Center (GCC) in Costa Rica, established in 2022, is helping expand access to professional opportunities beyond the GMA. Today, nearly 20% of the center’s workforce is based outside the country’s central region, contributing to specialized functions that support global teams, processes and operations.

“While TransUnion offers modern workspaces within the GMA designed to foster innovation, teamwork and connection we also recognize the important role workplace flexibility plays in expanding access to professional opportunities,” said Bryan Castillo, Head of the GCC Costa Rica. “Our hybrid work model enables employees across different regions of the country to build careers with global exposure without having to permanently relocate. Combined with access to technology, digital tools and connectivity support, this approach helps create the conditions for talent to grow, contribute and succeed from virtually anywhere in Costa Rica.”

By expanding access to specialized employment opportunities, the company supports career development with international exposure while contributing to the creation of stable, formal employment opportunities in regions where these career paths have historically been less accessible.

Expanding Global Career Opportunities Beyond Costa Rica's GMA

One example of this impact is Karol Portugués, a TransUnion employee from Agua Caliente de Pittier, a rural community near La Amistad International Park in Costa Rica’s southern region.

Like many young professionals growing up outside the Greater Metropolitan Area, Karol faced challenges related to internet access, educational opportunities and exposure to specialized career paths. After studying English and overcoming various obstacles to continue her professional development, she found an opportunity at TransUnion to build a corporate career while remaining connected to the region where she grew up.

Karol joined the company in 2022 in customer support and operational service roles. Through her commitment to continuous learning and a willingness to take on new challenges, she steadily expanded her responsibilities, gaining experience in operational analysis and process optimization, while building the skills that prepared her for increasingly specialized positions.

As her role evolved, Karol began supporting process improvement and automation initiatives for TransUnion’s global customer service operations. Her contributions helped strengthen information validation and quality assurance processes, enabling teams to efficiently manage more than twice the daily case volume while maintaining high service standards.

Through this experience, she further developed expertise in data analysis, operational excellence and quality assurance — skills that accelerated her professional growth and prepared her for new opportunities within the organization.

In less than four years, her performance and development led to two promotions.

“For many people living in rural communities, accessing professional employment opportunities can be challenging,” said Portugués. “Having the opportunity to work in a global organization allows us not only to build meaningful careers, but also to achieve greater stability, continue growing professionally and remain connected to the communities where we belong.”

Beyond her own professional journey, Karol has become a strong advocate for employment opportunities in Costa Rica’s southern region. During her time at TransUnion, she has referred more than a hundred individuals interested in pursuing careers with the company. Her efforts have helped connect multiple professionals from the region with opportunities at TransUnion, creating a multiplier effect that brings globally connected careers closer to communities traditionally distant from the country’s major economic centers.

Karol’s story reflects a broader transformation taking place across Costa Rica’s labor market. As hybrid work models continue to evolve and organizations expand their talent strategies, geographic location is becoming less of a barrier than skills, potential and professional readiness.

For global organizations such as TransUnion, this evolution not only strengthens competitiveness and access to specialized talent, but also contributes to expanding economic opportunity and professional development in communities beyond the country’s primary urban centers.

About TransUnion Costa Rica (NYSE:TRU)

TransUnion is a global information and insights company that makes trust possible in the modern economy. What once was measured primarily in numbers and GDP is now also defined by inclusive opportunities that empower diverse professionals to thrive and grow. Across the country, multinational companies are helping shape a workforce that is not only specialized and globally connected, but also more equitable and human centered.

This evolution has created high-value roles that combine technical expertise — such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, automation, accounting and finance — with multilingual proficiency and soft skills. It’s a shift that highlights how human potential, not just investment figures, is driving progress.

According to CINDE, more than 162,000 people are now part of Costa Rica’s multinational industry, which contributes to approximately 8% of the national GDP. The arrival of new investments is expanding beyond the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM), generating more equitable access to opportunities and strengthening the country’s role as a strategic talent hub for global operations.

As this transformation continues, companies are placing increasing focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) — ensuring that growth is accessible to all professionals. CINDE reports that over 60% of multinational companies in Costa Rica actively monitor equity indicators and apply inclusive policies across recruitment, training and workplace flexibility.

Behind these numbers are people whose journeys reflect the country’s evolving definition of success — professionals who are breaking barriers and reshaping what opportunity looks like. One of them is Valeria Alvarado, whose story exemplifies how resilience, inclusion and a supportive workplace can open doors and redefine what it means to grow.

Valeria’s Story: Building a Career Across Borders

A resident of the canton of Flores, Valeria began her career as a high school English teacher and translator. Motivated by a passion for learning and helping others reach their potential, she discovered her calling in developing educational materials and programs. This led her to specialize in curriculum design and later earn a master’s degree in human resources, focused on talent development and training.

Valeria joined TransUnion in 2019 through an acquisition and has been part of the organization ever since. She currently serves TransUnion’s Global Capability Center (GCC) in Costa Rica as a Senior Analyst for International Sales Enablement, supporting operations across several countries. Reporting directly to an international manager has expanded her exposure and strengthened her global perspective. Her journey demonstrates how learning, inclusion and ongoing support can help Costa Rican professionals transcend borders.

Throughout her time at TransUnion, one of the projects she feels most proud of is her contribution to the company’s commercial training programs. Initially focused on operational tasks, she gradually took on more strategic responsibilities. Today, she develops case studies, coordinates with seven international regions and plays an active role in planning global processes. For Valeria, it has been a truly collaborative and deeply enriching experience that reflects her professional growth.

Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at a young age, Valeria has turned what could have been treated as a limitation into a source of strength. Her perseverance and love for learning have driven her to thrive professionally supported by adapted tools, flexible work options and inclusive spaces that allow her to excel, always accompanied by her guide dog, Bella.

“Living with retinitis pigmentosa has influenced many aspects of my personal and professional life. I’ve learned to plan every project and workspace carefully, ensuring I have the right conditions and support to do my best. Since joining TransUnion, I’ve received an incredibly positive response. My manager and the leadership team have always been open and supportive, especially when I introduced Bella, my guide dog,” said Valeria Alvarado.

Valeria believes that for companies to be truly inclusive, keeping an open mind is essential. She acknowledges that there are sometimes preconceived notions or concerns about the capabilities of people with disabilities, which can limit rather than promote inclusion. For her, the key is to ask, listen and create spaces where everyone can express their needs and how they can best contribute.

“At TransUnion, I’ve found exactly that: openness, willingness and respect. No one assumes something will be difficult for me, they always ask how I feel or what I might need to successfully complete a project, and that makes a world of difference,” she added.

A Workforce for Good: Inclusion with a Global Impact

Valeria’s story reflects the spirit of Workforce for Good, TransUnion’s global employee value proposition that promotes careers with purpose through three pillars: providing opportunities for personal and professional growth, fostering a flexible and inclusive work experience and generating a positive impact in communities.

Today, TransUnion’s GCC in Costa Rica brings together around 800 associates located both in the GAM and in rural areas, demonstrating the strategic value the country offers.

“We prioritize the health, safety and well-being of our associates. We value and support our people, which translates into engagement and motivation to give their best at work. For many, their role is not just a job, but a meaningful career that allows them to grow, develop and achieve both personal and collective goals,” said Bryan Castillo, Head of the GCC in Costa Rica.

Stories like Valeria’s remind us that true progress lies in people — in how opportunity, innovation and inclusion can come together to empower growth, both locally and globally.

About TransUnion Costa Rica (NYSE:TRU)

TransUnion is a global information and insights company that makes trust possible in the modern economy. Today, it’s clear that flexibility isn’t seen as a perk — it’s rated as a crucial element of the modern work culture.

A work model for the future

The TransUnion GCC in Costa Rica have implemented a model that not only allows the flexibility to work from home, but for many roles, also offers the ability to work remotely from anywhere in the country. This model makes employment possible for people who live outside of the main urban nodes, as well as those who aren’t able — or find it challenging — to work from a physical office space, i.e., specially-abled individuals.

Flexibility and workplace wellness practices have become fundamental pillars of organizational success. Companies with a visionary approach understand that a flexible work model is not just a competitive differentiator but a strategic necessity.

The hybrid work model is emerging as an effective solution to foster collaboration and adapt to employees’ busy work and personal lives. This approach not only increases productivity but also increases job satisfaction. Several studies, like this one from Wework, support this strategy,

highlighting that 50% of workers report that the hybrid model has had a positive impact on their mental health, productivity and creative processes.

Driving workplace innovation and engagement

The TransUnion GCC in Costa Rica is dedicated to building a future-ready workforce by fostering flexibility and collaboration through ongoing learning and development, while positively impacting the country by creating sustainable career opportunities. To address these goals within a hybrid work environment, companies must adopt robust strategies to ensure employees are operating at optimal level, while ensuring they are engaged and feel like they belong.

Comprehensive wellness initiatives, like health fairs and yoga sessions, as well as personal and professional development opportunities, serve as key drivers of productivity and employee satisfaction. According to Gallup’s companies [AP1] with a high level of engagement report 22% higher profitability, 21% higher productivity, and up to 65% less turnover.

Additionally, collaboration between communications and human resources teams is critical. It ensures that employees stay informed about company news, policies and programs, strengthening the sense of belonging and community, despite the hybrid nature of the business. High-impact, timely and employee-centric communication builds trust with employees, contributing to a culture of inclusiveness and belonging, reinforcing loyalty and motivation.

Well-being is another aspect worth highlighting, underscoring the importance of creating an environment where every employee feels supported. These actions are not just symbolic — they are concrete reflections of a corporate philosophy that values each individual. At the GCC Costa Rica, this commitment extends to mental health, ensuring that employees have access to resources and programs that promote emotional well-being. Our active promotion of, and participation in these initiatives is a testament of our commitment to building an environment in which all our employees feel empowered.

Further to the above, demonstrating commitment to having a productive and enabling environment by providing employees with the resources and tools they need to succeed is key. For example, our internet reimbursement benefit ensures employees, regardless of their location, have access to technology.

The results of these initiatives speak for themselves. High participation in workshops and internal campaigns shows that employees feel included and valued. Adapting these activities to meet the needs of a workforce blending remote and in-person work, further ensures that everyone can participate and contribute.

Building a more human-centric future in the workplace

The results of these strategies demonstrate that companies that adopt workplace well-being practices can improve their competitiveness and create a more inclusive and sustainable work environment.

With the prospect of some companies planning to return to their offices full time, the TransUnion Global Capability Center (GCC) in Costa Rica recognizes the importance of offering flexibility to employees. Talent isn’t limited to a particular geographical location, and today more than ever, work is an activity, not a place.

To learn more about the work we do in Costa Rica and how it benefits TransUnion, click here.

costa rica,Costa_Rica

The new facility will provide a world-class working environment for its almost 500, and growing, hybrid-working employees, the majority of whom joined the center in the last 12 months.

The GCC Costa Rica plays a key role in TransUnion’s global operating model, enabling a ‘follow the sun’ model of productivity across our GCC network that allows the business to provide expanded time zone and language coverage, and business continuity for customers and consumers, primarily in North and South America. This enables TransUnion to provide best-in-class global support, quickly deliver premium services, and develop new products and solutions more efficiently.

"It's been an honor to welcome nearly 500 colleagues into TransUnion's Costa Rica team during our first year, and a testament to the strong local talent," said Bryan Castillo, Director of the Costa Rica Global Capability Center. "We're excited to open a state-of-the-art new office space to help the team collaborate and connect."

The new office environment was planned to foster collaboration, creativity, and employee well-being. It was designed and equipped with cutting edge furnishing and technology, and offers spacious work areas, a sports center and a physiotherapy room, among other amenities. In addition to meeting and collaboration areas, there are flexible spaces for learning, training and other activities. Infrastructure innovations, such as state-of-the-art networking and audio-visual technology, enable seamless interaction between in-person and virtual employees, focused on enhancing communication and organizational engagement globally.

The GCC Costa Rica’s hybrid working model means that, depending on their role, employees can work in the new offices, or they can work remotely. This flexible approach means that some roles are fully remote, making employment opportunities accessible to individuals who might not have been considered before. This means those outside of the greater metropolitan areas, can actively participate in the economy. To date, more than 30% of the GCC Costa Rica’s employees are based in outlying areas.

Furthermore, the center in Costa Rica actively supports TransUnion’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion by creating equal opportunities for all candidates and employees, regardless of their background, gender or location. Inclusive hiring practices play a critical role in all talent sourcing and other human resource processes, making it very attractive to the Costa Rican workforce.

“Our GCC operating model makes employment possible for people who live outside the main urban nodes, or who have disabilities that make it difficult or impossible for them to work in an office context,” said Eric Hess, executive vice president, Global Operations at TransUnion. “It supports our commitment to build and nurture future talent, leading the way in creating more flexible and diverse working environments, while offering Costa Ricans international experience while working in a local context.”

TransUnion has operated in Costa Rica since 2000, when it launched its operations as TransUnion Central America. In late 2022, TransUnion established the GCC Costa Rica to support the business worldwide in multiple languages and across time zones.

“TransUnion has already created nearly 500 jobs for people in Costa Rica, delivering on the promises it made when the center was initially announced,” said Marianela Urgellés, the Managing Director of CINDE. “In a short time, TransUnion’s Global Capability Center in Costa Rica has showcased our country’s ability to supply the skilled talent necessary for successful global operations.
